Alex McCrone Junior Convenor There was good turnout for the Junior Open played over the Darley and Fullarton courses last week. In the under 14 category there were 14 competitors playing Fullarton on what was an overcast but calm day. The scoring was very good with many boys under the CSS on the day. The winner of the Rotary Cup went to Troon Welbeck’s Luke Greig with a fantastic 76 net 52. On the Darley course there were also 14 players looking to win the Junior Open and Scratch competitions. Once again there were some fine scores coming in and the winner of the Troon Welbeck Scratch Trophy was Robbie Muir from Kilmarnock Barassie carding a very impressive 68, four shots clear of the field. The winner of the Junior Open, collecting the Cliff Francis Memorial Trophy, was Ross McDonald from Kilmarnock Barassie. Ross shot a very good 72 over Darley giving him a nett score of 64. A big thank you to all players who played on the day and hopefully we will see them again next year. Alex McCrone Junior Convenor Welbeck played their first two league matches of the season away from home with the first at Seafield against Ayr Belleisle.
There were team debuts for Harvey Broadfoot and Freya Russell. It was a tight match with Welbeck giving lots of shots to their opponents on the night and the match finished with Belleisle taking the points by 3.5 - 2.5. Thanks to Ayr Belleisle for great hospitality on the evening and we look forward to see them over at Welbeck for the return match. Our second match was played away to Irvine Golf Club on what was a very calm night with the midges coming out in force. There were debuts for Callum Gilligan, Rory Inglis and Ethan McIntyre. This was also a close match up of players and once again there were plenty of strokes given by Welbeck. Three of the six matches went up the last hole and Welbeck came out with a superb win by 3.5 - 2.5. Four of the six players had not played this course before this evening. Once again the hospitality from Irvine was excellent and we look forward to see them soon at Welbeck. Alex McCrone Junior Convenor Last night the final of both club championship and Bowman cup took place over the Fullarton course. Once again the heavy rain came down but with little wind blowing the Juniors got on with the task in hand. ![]() Ben and Cameron with Club Captain Peter Doyle holding the trophy. In the Club scratch final Ben Fleming got off to a good start taking a 2 hole advantage after the first few holes but Cameron Johnstone came back at him and reduced the deficit with some very good golf being played. Cameron then took control of the game after the turn and although Ben got himself back into contention Cameron held out for a 1 up win in the end. The match was refereed by Club Captain Peter Doyle. ![]() Cameron Johnstone is all smiles holding the Scratch trophy. The handicap final for the Bowman Cup was contested by Freya Russell and Alec Clark and this was played in a good spirit with both players trading holes over the first nine holes with Alec one up at the turn. A run of holes from the tenth saw Alec take a commanding lead which Freya found hard to claw back as the heavens opened up resulting in a 5 and 4 win for Alec meaning he held on to the Trophy he won last year. Well done to both players. ![]() Finalists Freya and Alec with Club Captain Peter Doyle. ![]() Alec is delighted to retain the handicap trophy Alex McCrone Junior Convenor As predicted the weather was pretty awful for the semi finals and all the players should be proud of their performances on the night .
