Current Clubhouse renovations meant that our Annual Burns Nicht was held this year in The South Beach Hotel - and what a nicht it was!!
Proprietors Stuart and Jonny Watt pulled out all the stops to make this a night to remember for Troon Welbeck Golf Club members and guests with a fabulous setting, great food and excellent service.
We had 90 members and guests who enjoyed a full programme of excellent music and song, plus hilarious speeches.
Jonny Watt piped in the Haggis which was addressed and dispatched by The Captain
Henk Tor and Robert Gray - "The Border Reivers"- were in grand voice and had the feet tapping with stirring songs, and were joined on stage by singer/songwriter Scott McMahon to make a terrific Trio.
Scott, eldest son of yours truly, had made the trip from London to attend and added a new dimension to our programme.
Our Guest Speakers, all from Cumbernauld Burns Club had the audience enthralled with their very own brand of humour with Chairman Jim MacArthur, Willie Barr - Toasted The Lassies, Peter Capaldi- recited 'To a Mouse' and 'To a Louse' and had us smiling at 'Albert and the Lion'- different class! Ian Park, paid a marvellous tribute to Robert Burns with an interesting and thoughtful Immortal Memory. Yours truly got the chance to join big Jim and Willie for a knockabout version of Burns best drinking song - 'Willie Brewed A Peck o' Malt' -great fun!!
Immediate Past Ladies Captain, Margaret Hogarth surprised us all with a truly magnificently clever and extremely witty 'Reply for the Lassies', putting a shell-shocked Willie Barr right in his place! Well done Margaret!!
Our Burns Nicht would not be complete without Past Captain, Wilson Barrie's show-stopping rendition of 'Tam o' Shanter' - absolute magic and well worthy of his standing ovation. Our Raffle raised £200 for Club Funds and Secretary Richard Cox gave a gracious vote of thanks, before proceedings were drawn to a close with 'The Star o' Rabbie Burns' and 'Auld Lang Syne' sung with great vigour by the Company.
