Troon Welbeck Member Brian Reid is about to swop his golf shoes for deck shoes and wellies as he sets off on an adventure of a lifetime.
Brian has signed up as a crewman on the 60 foot, Ocean-going Yacht - Derry/Londonderry/Dhoire - sailing from Cape Town in South Africa to Albany, near Perth in Western Australia, on the third leg of the 'Clipper Round the World Race'.
This is expected to take around 22 days, with a crew of 20 on board, 2 'watches' of 10, each working 6 hour shifts and Skippered by Daniel Smith of Largs.
Brian, who has been sailing since 1992, and has already crossed the Atlantic from the Virgin Islands ( what was he doing there?) to Kinsale in Ireland - a voyage lasting 24 days. During this trip he will be doing his share of crewing, cooking,( he tells me he does a nice Curry!) and general cleaning duties. The race is supporting the UNICEF Charity, and we wish Brian, fair winds, every success, and a safe trip.
Brian will try and keep us posted with his progress.
God Speed, Brian.
